Q:   What is PET?

A: PET is an acronym for "Positron Emission Tomography" During a PET scan patients receive an injection of a biomarker or radiopharmaceutical. After the tracer has had sufficient time to circulate the patient is placed on the PET scanner. The PET scanner produces images which reveal the distribution of the tracer. The tracers used in PET often accumulate in various diseases such as cancer and allow detection earlier than other methods of diagnostic imaging.
